Billie Eilish’s show at London’s O2 arena was momentarily halted on Saturday after a number of fans experienced problems due to the extreme heat.
She said, “Are you all OK?” “People began to pass out and had to be rescued. I know it’s hot “,
She paused the music until the crowd in front of the stage calmed down after fans complained of being “squished.”
Eilish advised, “Take a step back and give everyone some space.” “Just say anything if someone seems a little woozy.”
“Don’t try to keep your sentiments alive,” she advised.
This isn’t the first time the singer has paused a show to check on her audience. After witnessing someone struggling to breathe during a Happier Than Ever tour event in Atlanta in February, she stopped the show and refused to continue until they could get an inhaler.
She asked a crew member, “Can we just take one?”
Later that month, she also interrupted a show at Madison Square Garden in New York, telling fans: “You are free to take a seat if you like. You’re free to go now. Take a breath and sit down.”
Since ten people were killed in a stampede at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival in Houston last year, the subject of crowd safety has gotten a lot of attention.
Later, audience members chastised the emergency services’ response and questioned why the event was not called off. The events that led to the catastrophe are the subject of an investigation.
Fans took matters into their own hands-on Saturday night at the O2. One group created a protective circle around a fellow concertgoer in distress and turned on their phone lights to inform the security personnel.
After three minutes, Eilish rejoined her show. “I appreciate you,” she said afterward, thanking “all the security [and] all the employees” at the event.
The concert’s atmosphere was frenetic from the start, with spectators regularly drowning out the star’s breathy singing.
When Eilish neared the edge of the stage, sunk to her knees during Therefore I Am, took up a fan’s Pride flag and placed it over her shoulders, or even battled to untangle a scrunchie from her jet-black pigtails, Beatlemania-pitch shouts echoed throughout the O2.
It was the kind of reaction you’d expect from a boyband like BTS or One Direction, but Eilish’s songs are about the painful messiness of early adulthood, not the illusory promise of romance.
Nerves and sadness, awkward social situations, and hopeless boyfriends are all themes that she sings about. In addition, her tracks show a skepticism of authority and a penchant for the macabre (one features the sound of a dentist’s drill).
It’s no surprise that her fans connect with her lyrics so strongly. At the age of 20, Eilish has won seven Grammy Awards.
Eilish didn’t need to shortchange listeners on some of their favorite songs because she only has two albums under her belt, even if she has grown musically since they were released.
