According to Britain’s PA Media news agency, Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey entered a not guilty plea to four counts of sexual assault and one count of inciting another person to engage in penetrative sexual behavior without consent on Thursday in a London court.
The 62-year-old “House of Cards” actor was formally charged with four counts of sexual assault against three men and a fifth count of inciting another person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent in June. He appeared before the Old Bailey wearing a blue suit and tie.
Spacey’s previous court appearance was on June 16, when he gave deputy chief magistrate Tan Ikram his name, birthdate, and London residence in addition to hearing the accusations against him read aloud in front of the court.
He is accused of sexually assaulting a man on two separate occasions in London in 2005, the second man on a different occasion in 2008, and the third guy in Gloucestershire, western England, in 2013. The 2013 incident is also a factor in the fifth count of non-consensual penetrative action.
A three to four-week trial beginning on June 6, 2023, was set by the judge, Mr. Justice Wall, during the hearing on Thursday.
In addition to being the artistic director of London’s Old Vic theater from 2003 to 2015, Spacey has two Academy Awards to his name for his performances in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty.”
In the previous year, he returned to acting and appeared in the political Netflix series “House of Cards.”
Following his sexual assault lawsuit in the U.K., Variety can report that Kevin Spacey will no longer be playing Genghis Khan in the film being pitched at Cannes.
In “1242: Gateway to the West,” a historical drama that was being pitched at the Cannes film market, the actor was slated to play a holy man of a Hungarian castle who tries to stop one of Genghis Khan’s troops from entering Europe. The holy man’s role was to be played by Spacey.
The English-language “Gateway to the West,” which is being directed by Péter Soós, is expected to start shooting on October 17 and has a budget of between $10 million and $25 million. In addition to Eric Roberts and Christopher Lambert, the film is supported by the National Film Institute of Hungary, Foresight Media, and LipSync.
However, after the former “House of Cards” actor was charged in the U.K. with four counts of sexual assault, the movie’s producer, Bill Chamberlain, tells Variety that Spacey has been replaced as the film’s lead. The new lead will be disclosed in due course and is the subject of ongoing negotiations.
