New teaser shows Lady Gaga star in Joker: Folie à Deux

Music icon Lady Gaga announced Thursday that she will star in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the much awaited follow-up to the 2019 movie “Joker.”

According to Box Office Mojo, the original movie made over $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture. For his work in the film, Joaquin Phoenix received the Best Actor Oscar.

Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, a lonely loner with clown-like features who failed as a comic and was imprisoned for killing his favorite late-night presenter (Robert De Niro) at the conclusion of the first movie. Todd Phillips will once again helm the follow-up.

The movie is scheduled to premiere on October 4, 2024.

The “Bad Romance” singer didn’t reveal what part she’ll be playing, but the teaser suggests that she’ll probably play the Batman villain, Harley Quinn. In the video, Phoenix and Gaga are seen as silhouettes dancing to brassy renditions of the romance song “Cheek to Cheek,” with Gaga sporting the trademark heart tattoo on her cheek.

The term “folie à deux” describes a shared mental illness that affects two or more people, fueling even more rumors that Gaga may play Harley. Harley has been associated with the Joker as an adversarial sidekick, moll, and romantic partner ever since the character was first introduced in “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s. The connection between them was presented on the show as toxic, with the Joker frequently abusing Harley, as would later appear in comic books, movies, and video games.

Although long a favorite of comic book readers, Harley became more well-known after Margot Robbie portrayed the character in three Warner Bros. movies: “Suicide Squad” (2016), “Birds of Prey” (2010), and “The Suicide Squad” (2021). The third season of “Harley Quinn,” an animated series on HBO Max, debuted on July 28. Kaley Cuoco provides the character’s voice.

Gaga was nominated for best actress for her work in “A Star Is Born” and won an Oscar for her song, but Renée Zellweger won the award for her performance in “Judy.” Many reviewers referred to Gaga’s lack of an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in the 2021 movie “House of Gucci” as a snub for the actress.
