Driven by developments in digital technology and growing dependence on electronic devices, the field of forensic investigations is evolving. While some people discover their path to the field by integrating multiple skill sets, others pursue investigative work through conventional channels, including law enforcement or legal environments. This combination of knowledge drives continuous debates on the moral use of technology in public and private spheres. Against this background, some analysts have concentrated on bridging the gap between scientific rigor and investigative technique.

Born in 1978 in Brooklyn, New York, Robert B. Fried’s journey in forensic investigations began with an early fascination for science, technology, and law. Growing up on Long Island, he regularly visited his four grandparents in Brooklyn—Holocaust survivors who instilled in him a profound respect for humanity, ethics, and perseverance. Those family experiences, combined with a high school forensic science class, sparked a curiosity that evolved into a dedicated career in digital forensics.

Fried’s passion for writing also surfaced early. At age 13, a local author published a poem he wrote in a book. He continued exploring ways to blend technical knowledge with clear communication—two skills that would define much of his professional life.

He pursued his interest in forensic science at the University of New Haven, ultimately earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Fried began his career as a Computer Crime Specialist at the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), instructing federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel on basic and advanced data recovery and analysis. This teaching experience helped him develop a commitment to best practices in evidence handling, preservation, collection, and examination, something he values today.

Over the years, Fried rose to leadership roles in professional services firms, guiding teams through electronic evidence collection and analysis. Balancing his leadership responsibilities and being an expert witness in high-stakes cases, he has remained focused on integrity and thoroughness. In court testimony or advising clients, legal counsel, and investigative teams, Fried has always emphasized defensible methodologies, and the importance of maintaining a chain of custody throughout the lifecycle of a case.

Outside the office, Fried is a devoted husband and father of three children. Professionally, he helps mentor the next generation of forensic investigators, working closely with students interested in pursuing a career in digital forensics, early-career professionals, and his peers.

Fried’s dedication to educating others includes writing books and articles on digital forensic practices, speaking at conferences, and serving on advisory boards. He consistently advocates for best practices – in investigative work—from properly cataloging data and thorough documentation to adhering to fundamental scientific principles.

Robert B. Fried hopes his contributions—encompassing teaching, writing, and influencing the use of best practices, including defensible investigative methodologies—will have a lasting effect on current and future generations of digital forensics practitioners. Through his work, he aims to highlight the importance of preserving the integrity of electronic evidence – ensuring that it is identified, handled, preserved, collected, and analyzed with the care and precision it deserves.
