Some stories begin with ambition. Others begin with experience. Melody Morrison’s journey into children’s literature began with something quieter and far more enduring: a lifelong commitment to courage, compassion, and meeting life honestly, even when it is uncomfortable.
Based in Oklahoma City, Melody Morrison is the author of Bright Kites and New Friends, the first release in a planned three-book children’s series designed to introduce young readers to themes of bravery, kindness, curiosity, and emotional resilience. While her stories are playful and visually inviting, the heart behind them is shaped by decades of service, observation, and real-world encounters that taught her how early lessons often echo the longest.
Before becoming an author, Melody spent much of her professional life serving others through law enforcement, emergency medical response, wildland firefighting, and work as a park ranger. Those years exposed her to both the beauty and the fragility of human experience. Rather than hardening her outlook, they deepened her belief that courage and compassion must be learned early and reinforced often.
“I think life is going to throw all kinds of things at us,” Melody Morrison shared. “We need not to be afraid, and we need to be looking for kindness in ways we can help throughout that.”
That philosophy lives at the center of Bright Kites and New Friends, a story inspired by a real moment Morrison witnessed at a kite festival. What began as a simple scene became a narrative about stepping into unfamiliar spaces, forming connections, and discovering that joy often exists just beyond hesitation. Like many of her ideas, the story came first and the title followed later, shaped by emotional truth rather than formula.
Creativity has always been part of Melody’s life. She wrote her first children’s book in elementary school and pursued art academically before career responsibilities took priority. Writing, drawing, and storytelling never disappeared, even as they were set aside in favor of stability and service. Over the years, ideas accumulated quietly, waiting for the right moment to surface.
That moment arrived when she recognized a contradiction she could no longer ignore. She had spent years encouraging courage in others while postponing her own creative calling. Watching close friends and family publish their work reignited something she could not dismiss. Practice what you preach stopped being a phrase and became a personal challenge.
“I finally said, this is it,” she explained. “If I believe in facing fear, then I need to do that myself.”
That decision led to the release of Bright Kites and New Friends, now available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The book marks the beginning of a series that continues with The Most Curious Llama, scheduled for early next year, followed by Larry Lemon. Each story draws from lived observation and emotional insight rather than abstract instruction.
The Most Curious Llama centers on curiosity as both risk and reward, following a character inspired by real experiences on a ranch where fear gradually gives way to growth and trust. Larry Lemon introduces humor and tension through the story of a prized lemon determined to adapt and survive when faced with an unexpected fate. Though lighthearted in tone, each narrative reinforces the same underlying message: courage grows through action, and kindness changes outcomes.
To bring these stories to life visually, Melody partnered with illustrator Kevin Cardona, whose work translates emotion into imagery with clarity and warmth. As someone with an art background herself, she values the difference between having an idea and executing it with professional intention. That collaboration allows the books to feel cohesive, thoughtful, and accessible for children and adults alike. Faith also plays a steady role in her work, guiding her perspective without overshadowing the story. She often references Isaiah 41:9–10 as a grounding verse, not as a headline, but as a reminder that courage does not require fearlessness, only trust and forward movement.
Looking ahead, the new author envisions her books reaching beyond individual households and into classrooms, libraries, daycares, shelters, and community spaces. Educators across multiple states have already begun introducing her stories in schools, while local momentum continues to grow through signings and community outreach. For Melody, impact is measured less by accolades and more by longevity.
“If someone remembers a story years later,” she said, “or tells me it helped them or their child face something difficult, that’s the reward.”
Beyond her role as an author, Melody Morrison proudly identifies as a wife, sister, daughter, and lifelong community servant. She honors her late father as a lasting influence, celebrates her mother’s foundation of strength, and speaks with pride about her sister’s leadership and resilience. She shares her life with rescue dogs, enjoys kayaking, and remains deeply connected to the communities she has served throughout her career. These layers inform her writing not as credentials, but as a lived context.
