Filing a home warranty claim has a reputation for being frustrating. Long waits, unclear approvals, technicians who never show up on time. For many homeowners, that experience has defined their entire perception of the industry. Armadillo CEO Matan Slagter believes a clearer, faster, and more transparent process is what separates a product homeowners trust from one they regret buying.

Here is how the claims process actually works at Armadillo.

Two Ways to File

When something breaks, homeowners have two options for filing a claim: call in or go online. Armadillo has a US-based claims team and uses AI to help guide the claim filing process over the phone, while still giving any homeowner the ability to ask for a live person at any point.

The online path is intentionally lightweight. No login required. Homeowners confirm their email and address, describe what broke and why, and are through the process in two to three minutes. The goal is to remove every unnecessary barrier between a problem and a solution.

Choose Your Own Path

After filing, homeowners make one of the most important decisions in the process: do they want Armadillo to dispatch a technician from its vetted network, or do they prefer to use their own?

This is not a feature most home warranty companies offer. Armadillo built its technology around both paths, and Slagter notes that a meaningful portion of customers choose to bring in their own trusted technician rather than use the network. Both options are fully supported.

For homeowners who choose their own technician, Armadillo issues a pre-approval up to a set dollar amount immediately. If the repair looks like it will exceed that amount, the technician contacts Armadillo directly through a dedicated contractor line and receives real-time approval. The homeowner pays their technician and is then reimbursed digitally, via a text link that deposits funds directly into their bank account.

For homeowners who prefer Armadillo to handle dispatch, the company asks for three preferred days and time windows. A pre-vetted technician from the local network is scheduled within that availability. Armadillo pays the technician directly, so there is no upfront cost to the homeowner beyond the service fee, which is deducted from the overall coverage.

What Armadillo Is Optimizing For

The stated goal is resolution on the first visit. Slagter calls this “the first truck roll.” Getting a technician to the home and fixing the problem in a single visit is the ideal outcome, and it is what Armadillo’s operations are built around.

Speed and financial coverage are the two biggest drivers of customer satisfaction in home warranty, according to Slagter. A homeowner who files a claim does not want a multi-week wait or repeated trips back to diagnose a problem. They want something working again. When those two elements come together, it is what produces a review that reflects positively on the product.

Armadillo currently holds a 4.7-star rating on Google, which Slagter acknowledges is strong relative to industry peers but still short of where he wants it. The focus on first-visit resolution and transparent communication is how the company intends to keep raising that bar.

What Qualifies for Coverage

Not everything that breaks is automatically covered, and Slagter is clear about where confusion tends to arise. The most common source of friction is pre-existing conditions, particularly for homeowners who are brand new to a property. If a home inspection report flagged an issue before the warranty was purchased, that issue is not something the warranty is designed to cover retroactively.

For homeowners who have had a plan in place for a year or more, pre-existing conditions become largely a non-issue. The longer a homeowner has been with the same provider, the more clearly normal wear and tear can be distinguished from something that predated the coverage.

The other area where expectations sometimes need to be reset is around repair versus replacement. Armadillo, like most warranty providers, prioritizes repair when a system or appliance can reasonably be fixed. Replacement is covered when repair is not possible or when the age and condition of the unit make repeated repair impractical. Technicians and parts suppliers inform those decisions, and Armadillo communicates the reasoning to homeowners directly.

The process is not perfect in every situation. Parts get back-ordered. Technicians get stretched during peak seasons. But the goal, according to Slagter, is to make sure a homeowner always knows exactly where things stand and why.
